By Julia Evans WEEDONS residents are being called on to help fight a proposed new quarry in Templeton. Fulton Hogan put forward a plan for a new 170ha quarry on Templeton’s Dawsons, Curraghs and Jones Rds last week. Templeton Residents’ Association chairman Garry Kilday has organised a meeting with the Weedons Residents’ Association tonight at 7.30pm in St Saviour’s Anglican Church on Kirk Rd to establish petitions opposing the quarry. Mr Kilday said the concern is as the boundary between the Selwyn District Council and Christchurch City Council is Dawsons Rd, the district council may not be as inclined to listen to non-ratepaying constituents. Weedons association secretary Gary Doyle said the group had not yet met to discuss the issues the quarry would bring. But it would be supporting the Templeton group. “There will definitely be traffic implications for us,” he said. •Turn to page 3

BARN FIRE A Waddington hayshed was destroyed by fire on Sunday. Springfield chief fire officer Grant Williams said it was believed the cause of the fire was spontaneous combustion from damp bales. “There are no other indicators,” he said. Springfield, Sheffield and Kirwee fire brigades were called to the blaze about 3am on Sunday. Mr Williams said the owners of the hayshed were “pretty gutted” as they lost a lot of hay.

Meet Jonty: The cancer sufferer When you run, walk, jog, rollerblade, or push your friends on a bed at the Star Media City2Surf in March you’ll be helping 10-yearold Jonty Gray and other children like him. Andrew King reports

IN MARCH last year, Juliet and Hamish Gray got some of the worst news a parent could receive – their eight-year-old son had cancer. Jonty Gray had been “offcolour” for a few weeks and was having regular headaches. On a family trip over Easter weekend last year he became breathless while walking up a hill and developed bruises on his body. His family returned from Wanaka and took him to Christchurch Hospital where he was diagnosed with T-cell leukaemia. Fast-forward 21 months and the 10-year-old’s outcome is looking positive after numerous hospital visits, about six to nine months of intensive

chemotherapy, and plenty of support from his family, friends and hospital staff. In March next year, Jonty has been asked to sound the horn which will start thousands of participants off in the Star Media City2Surf fun run. It seems fitting considering his role as an ambassador with partner charity, the Child Cancer Foundation. Participants will be able to start their own fundraising pages or join the ‘courage team’, which will be fundraising on the day, or make a one-off donation. Those who have signed up for the event can also visit the Child Cancer Foundation tent and receive a post-run sports massage by giving a donation. Mrs Gray, who is a dentist, said Jonty is responding well to chemotherapy, which he will finish in July 2019.

Then doctors will monitor his bone marrow and watch for any side effects from the medication used to treat his cancer. When he first started showing signs of being unwell, it wasn’t apparent at the start just how sick he was. “We just told him to drink more water and go to bed earlier,” Mrs Gray said as he was complaining of headaches. When he was admitted to hospital, he was diagnosed straight away. “You think it can’t be happening to your family, but then that is not true as two to three children are diagnosed with cancer each week,” she said. About a week later, Jonty started his treatment, but he wasn’t letting it get him down. The creative boy came up with ways to amuse himself while in hospital.

who is City2Surf bound “I had a game with another patient where we would try to do the most crazy thing we could think of while attached to the pump. So I scooted around the wards with it. But then she brought in a unicycle and carried a baby around while attached to her pump. That was hard to beat,” he laughed. He also has fun with the hospital staff. “We play a game with the anaesthetist where he will set a total for me to count to before I fall asleep,” he said. He said he had beaten the anaesthetist a few times, but some times he would cheat. “I would pretend to push the button that started the drugs and start counting, by time they had realised that I hadn’t pushed it I had already counted to about 10,” he laughed. Jonty attends Cashmere Primary School and will be starting year six next year. He loves to draw and has taken to designing houses. Earlier in the year, he designed new railroad lines for Kaikoura to replace the ones damaged in the

earthquakes. While he does get tired easy, he loves to get out and play sports including touch

them,” he said. The one thing that really gets under his skin is he can’t eat sushi, unless it is freshly made, because of his low immunity. “It annoys me. I love sushi,” he said. Jonty has an older brother and sister. In March, he may get to perform live on stage with the band as part of the musical festival Selwyn Sounds. McKenzie was 17 when he first saw The Warratahs play live at the Gore Guitar Awards in the late 80s. He was on leave from the Royal New Zealand Air Force visiting his parents in Southland when they decided to travel to watch the band play. Steve McLennan Our People Fighting fires: ‘It is like riding a bike, Steve McLennan, 70, has been a volunteer firefighter on and off since 1964. Of those 54 years, 29 have been spent with the Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade. He speaks to Andrew King Tell me how you got involved with the volunteer fire brigade? I was friends with a guy whose father was the fire chief in Roxburgh, where I grew up, and you kind of just get roped into it. He used to say to me: ‘There is no use you sitting here by yourself, come with us.’ From there I was in. I think our first call out was a scrub fire on the hill behind Roxburgh. There are a few of those during the summer. Why did you keep doing it? It is like riding a bike, once you get on it is hard to get off. You are helping the community. That is my whole reason behind it. I could do it with my business up here because they were related. It worked really well. I knew where all the water points were around the district because of my spraying business. It is good local knowledge, like knowing all the roads and farms and you

can pass that on to the younger guys coming through. That is why I have kept around. People are always using my knowledge. What is the biggest fire you have been involved in? There have been some pretty big plantation fires we tackled years ago near Rakaia that took days to put out and were really

hard work. But the Port Hills fire was probably the biggest I have been involved with. We spent a lot of time loading helicopters with water and battling the blaze on Worsleys Spur. That is where you saw the full extent of that fire up and around those houses. It is not just fires you guys deal with, what are some of the

other memorable call-outs you have had? I spent the first 19 hours at the CTV site after the earthquake (February 22, 2011). It wasn’t the best place to be but you do what you got to do. What was it like? As an officer, I was keeping the tankers moving at the scene to

The big thing was everyone knew people were trapped and were working hard to free them. You could see the TV cameras pointed at us and that was a bit upsetting as we were just there to do a job. You had a hand in catching two arsonists about three years ago. Tell me about that? We were called to a suspicious house fire in Little River on New Year’s Eve. On our way back we found a hay barn on fire in Kaituna Valley, which was also suspicious. While we were fighting that fire, we were turned to another hay barn alight on Tai Tapu Rd and some trees on fire at the Tai Tapu golf course. We knew there was an arsonist running around. On our way to a flare up a few days later at one of the hay barn fires, we took a shortcut to the scene and saw a car sitting watching the flames from a distance. We handed the licence plate number to police and they were arrested for the arsons.

once you get on it’s hard to get off’ You must have attended a few crashes over the years? What is it like to turn out to those? I would hate to say how many road accidents I have been to. You get hardened to them but they sort of stick with you. Any that stand out in your mind? I wouldn’t want to single any out. They are all bad. You brace yourself for the worst scenario when you are heading there. It is easier to ramp down than up. So what paid the bills in between catching arsonists and putting out blazes? I spent 24-and-a-half years working for Fulton Hogan in Central Otago in the transport and cartage division before I moved to Canterbury in 1988. Then I was the freight manager for Maxwell Brothers for a few years before starting my own agricultural spraying business in 1994. I sold that about three years ago now and I am semi-retired. Semi-retired? Well, I am now paid by the Fire Service to drive new fire trucks from Wellington to their destination anywhere in the top of the South Island. There are not many weeks where I am not driving a big red truck around.

What else do you do for the Fire Service? I have been involved in a number of competitions in the fire brigade, including 22 years as an official. There are four different divisions they compete in – waterways, road crash rescue, driving, and the combat challenge. I also represented the United Fire Brigades’ Association and was the chair of the Mid-Canterbury subassociation and the Canterbury Provincial Association. I am also a life member of both of those organisations. Outside of the service, what do you get up to?

I used to be into speedway racing when I was in Central Otago. I raced TQ (threequarter) midget cars. I actually hold the record for the fastest four laps and fastest six laps at Waitati Speedway, which was closed down in the late 70s. They can’t take that from me. I had a bit of a go in Ellesmere for a couple of years but the business took priority and I gave that away about two years ago. We get out and watch it when we can. So tell me about your family? I am married to my lovely wife Wendy, who has stuck with me through the 30-odd years of

My daughter, Jody Phillipson, is married with two children and works in the travel industry. My son, Dave McLennan, is a talent scout for the Crusaders. Hold on. Your son works for the Crusaders, but you are from Central Otago – how does that work? It makes for short phone calls when we play each other and one comes out on top. Would you want a Crusaders jersey? No. What is the season looking like for fires? She is a bit dry out there. It will be a funny one. The spring rain has boosted the fuel sitting around with plenty of grass growth throughout the region. But the frustrating thing is people don’t take notice of what they are told. Some are burning rubbish in no fire season. It is a no-brainer. What do you say to those people? All you can do is extinguish the fire, take their details and leave it to the Fire Service. Some people you would like to throw everything at them, but you have to show professionalism. It is easier to shake your head and say nothing sometimes. I can feel the frustration. So any big plans for the year? The plan is to go whitebaiting as Wendy and I both love it. We have been going to more subdued spots for the past three years after Wendy got swept out to sea near the Rakaia River mouth. Luckily she was washed back into shore by the breakers but it was pretty scary. I love whitebait, but I love my wife more.

But on March 3 she’ll be getting Stellar back together and heading to Lincoln Domain for Selwyn Sounds. The day-long music festival follows last year’s inaugural event, which saw Kiwi music heavyweights the Jordan Luck Band, Mi-Sex

and Dragon play to a crowd of about 8000. Growing up in Hornby with sister Bic, Runga said she hadn’t spent much time in the small town but had been to several of Lincoln University’s notorious parties. “My father went to Lincoln College but I just went to parties,” she said. She’s looking forward to playing so close to home, she

said “people are always happy you’ve come to play.” But Stellar isn’t officially back together. The March festival could be a bit of a test, Runga hasn’t ruled out a full reunion. “I’m not sure if we are back together per se, we are doing some gigs and we always had fun doing that. Playhouse built by prisoners to benefit families Leeston’s A WOODEN playhouse built by prisoners will now be used by several families throughout Selwyn. Prisoners at Rolleston Prison built the playhouse as part of their trade training and gifted it to Selwyn Parenting Network before Christmas to be raffled. Rolleston mother-of-two Rachael Lindsay was drawn the winner. But Ms Lindsay bought the raffle tickets to support the network. So when she won, she wondered what to do with the playhouse as her sons, aged 10 and 12, were a bit older. She decided to donate it to the network so other families in Selwyn could enjoy it. Network co-ordinater Kate Webb said it was a lovely thing to do. “She has totally stunned us all with the most kindest Christmas gesture of donating the playhouse to Selwyn Parenting Network in recognition of the work we do in the community – a believer in paying it forward and seeing other young Selwyn families enjoy it.” Formed in June 2010, the Selwyn Parenting Network is a community group providing support and network opportunities for parents and caregivers of children of any age.

THe Leeston Dog Park recently opened its gates for the first time ahead of schedule. Leeston Community Committee chairman Lloyd Clausen said since the park opened, it has been getting quite a bit of use. While the park is not entirely complete, it was opened for the holiday season so that equipment could be trialled. Equipment includes hurdles, a broad jump, jump through, grooming table, balance beam, pole weave, ramp and tunnel. A pond, litter bins, seating and signage are yet to be installed. The new 1.8ha park is located between the A&P Showgrounds and land leased to the Ellesmere Heritage Park. Mr Clausen said the park has taken awhile to be built but it is a good job. By the time the park is completed it is estimated to cost $145,000.

They needed support so their repairs were carried out in a timely way,” explains Cheryl who adds that each person’s claim is a ‘living claim’, which is transferred

These attackers need to be punished as any other attacker would, a slap on the hand and a telling off won’t really do much. these nasty youths. Now the judge needs to do his/her job and seriously deter/punish these law breakers, and send a clear message that this behaviour cannot be tolerated. Amanda Wilson – We know that in some cases, if the public have a strong enough opinion and stance against this sort of behaviour, there is a possibility they will use this case to send a message. But the public need to be loud and strong. Otherwise they will be slapped on the hand and sent on their merry way to do this again. Absolutely disgusting behaviour and I hope they get their karma. Drought resources offered for farmers While no-one can make it rain, there are a number of management strategies that farmers can put in place to protect the future performance of their capital breeding stock, so we are encouraging farmers to visit our online resource Beef + Lamb New Zealand is offering an online resource for farmers affected by the dry conditions. The resources include a fact sheet outlining strategies to manage and mitigate the effects of drought, coping with stress on the farm and advice on feed requirements and animal welfare during the dry period. Sam McIvor, chief executive of Beef + Lamb NZ, said with the correct planning and use of tools such as early weaning, body condition scoring and feed budgets, farmers could make the most efficient and effective use of limited feed resources. “Scorching temperatures and minimal rainfall over recent weeks is concerning farmers throughout the country as feed quality and quantity falls away and feed crops struggle in the extreme heat. “While no-one can make it rain, there are a number of management strategies that farmers can put in place to protect the future performance of their capital

breeding stock, so we are encouraging farmers to visit our online resource.” Mr McIvor said one of the key concerns was the timing of this dry period, which will affect lamb growth. “Farmers who would normally be able to wean and sell lambs are now looking at options around store lambs, at lighter weights, meaning lower values.” The current weather patterns also appear to be persisting with forecast rain not arriving. In the event we do get rain, small amounts can only add to the frustration with increased risks of internal parasite burden and in some areas facial eczema. “Conditions are variable between and within regions. We’re urging farmers to seek advice from Beef + Lamb NZ extension managers and other rural professionals. It’s also important farmers talk to their neighbours and look out for each other,” Mr McIvor said.

Milk processor partnering with grocery chain to supply fresh milk and cream Synlait Milk is partnering with Foodstuffs South Island Limited to become the cooperative’s exclusive supplier of its private label fresh milk and cream from early 2019. Synlait intends to invest approximately $125 million in an advanced liquid dairy packaging facility to supply Foodstuffs South Island. The investment establishes a platform for Synlait to pursue a range of dairy-based products for domestic and export markets in the future. “Combined, the partnership with Foodstuffs South Island and investment in a new facility is a further and significant step towards our goal of being a more diversified and balanced business,” managing director and CEO John Penno said. “We believe this opens up a new category - everyday dairy - and has the potential to both leverage our current position and explore new customers and markets. “This category represents the dairy products people consume every day. Our long-term success in this category will be based on our ability to win customers in the New Zealand market first and today we’re taking a foundational step towards that.” Synlait’s partnership with Foodstuffs South Island is strategic for both parties. “We are very proud of our Canterbury dairy farmers and the way they farm. We are excited about making our farmers’ fresh milk available to everyone in the South Island, in partnership with Foodstuffs,” Mr Penno said. Fresh milk and cream from Synlait will be packaged in Value and Pams branded products, which are available across New World, PAK'nSAVE, Four Square and On The Spot stores. “The partnership allows the co-operative to provide high-quality fresh milk and cream to our customers. The partnership allows us to give our customers surety around milk supply with an innovative New Zealand-based milk supplier,” CEO

Foodstuffs South Island Steve Anderson said. “In time, we are looking forward to collaborating with Synlait to create a range of new and innovative dairy-based products that our customers will enjoy.” Synlait’s research and development centre in Palmerston North, which is a collaboration with Massey University and FoodPilot, will provide the technical new product development expertise needed to establish, validate and deliver these capabilities at Synlait. The expected $125 million investment in an advanced liquid dairy packaging facility is aimed at delivering a state-of-the-art liquid blending and packaging platform. It will allow Synlait to produce fresh milk and cream for domestic use and the ability to pursue a range of dairy-based extended and long-life consumer products in future. “This will be one of the most sophisticated fresh milk and cream processing facilities in New Zealand,” Mr Penno said. “By leveraging what we have learnt about milk quality and blending dairy products in our infant formula business, we will deliver a great facility at Synlait Dunsandel. “Our everyday dairy category offers many B2B and B2C opportunities in the established and growing export milk and cream market.”

Are you passionate about passion fruit? By Henri Ham PASSION FRUIT are a delicious summer fruit that can be enjoyed in salads, desserts, drinks, sauces and of course eaten fresh. They are a sub-tropical plant, which basically means they need a lot of sun (at least six hours a day) and also like water. And they also need something to grow on – like a trellis or similar strong structure. If you think you’ve got just the spot to grow passion fruit, then buy some seedlings. Passion fruit like well-drained soil and they are also heavy feeders, which means they need more nutrients than your average plant. So before you start planting, dig in some organic matter to the soil. It’s also a good idea to pour some slow-release citrus fertiliser in the spot your going to plant. Next plant each seedling around 2m apart. Once planted, spread some mulch to help retain moisture and heat in the soil. And don’t forget to water. Ideally with passion fruit, you want to get a good network of vines growing across your support and producing fruit. To

do this, start by pinching off any laterals that grow off the main vine. Once your main vine (leader) is in a good position on the support structure, pinch out the top bud to encourage lots of side shoots to spread sideways and then train them across your support. Give the plants a couple more feeds of citrus fertiliser during the year. And be sure to water regularly, particularly when they start fruiting. When the fruit are ready to harvest they will go from green to a black/deep purple colour and you can start picking them off.
